As 2017 comes to a close, it’s time to look back at the Pinshape Community’s favourite designs of the year. In this post, you’ll find 2017’s top rated designs which include contest winners, functional assemblies, and challenging electronics projects. 

Custom Cutaway Saber Hilt by cworthdynamics

With the release of The Last Jedi, we couldn’t think of a better way to kick things off than with cworthdynamics’ Saber Hilt. This was designed to print on the Formlabs Form 2, and Sean Charlesworth has included a full guide so that you can create your own. 

2016 Suzuki GSX-RR MotoGP RC Motorcycle by Brett Turnage

Brett Turnage did an incredible job with his RC Motorcycle designs which includes a number of impressive features like an articulating rider and gyroscopic stabilization. A challenging but rewarding project for makers and RC enthusiasts!

SLO Printed Lens Camera by Amos Dudley 

The SLO Camera is almost entirely printed side for a few minor components and the film. Even the lens was printed on a Formlabs Form 2, and their tutorial on the process is a great reference for learning to create optically transparent designs. 

3D-printed Watch with Tourbillon by TheGoofy

We were blown away by the mechanical savvy required for this functional Tourbillon design by Christoph Laimer. His video of the tourbillon in action and assembly is a must see. 

OpenRC Tractor by makit

Makit did a great job with the design and presentation of this OpenRC tractor and designed it with modularity in mind. Check out their design page for add-ons or create your own!

Violin by bchan 

This design by Brian Chan is almost entirely printed and sounds like a proper violin. Check out the video of the violin in action which uses an actual recording from this print as a backdrop. 

Keychain / Smartphone Stand Cat by Sonia Verdu

Sonia Verdu does an incredible job with each of her designs and this one is no exception. These simple articulating smartphone stands that print in one piece are a favorite throughout the community. 

Boxer Engine by elliotouchterlony

This boxer engine by Elliot Ouchterlony requires only a few non-printed components which are listed on the design page. This model mimics a true boxer engine and each of the pistons are fully functional. 
Clementine by gokcen_yuksek

Gokcen Yuksek is a 3D artist who’s worked on projects for Black Mirror and a number of other popular movies and TV shows. Her Clementine design won first place in the Character Design Contest!

Widowmaker’s Widow’s Kiss Collapsible Sniper Rifle (Overwatch) by laellee

Laellee’s Widow’s Kiss rifle is full-sized based on the model in the game and fully transformable much like the prop in the game. If you’re looking for a printing project during your time off for the holidays, this is a great pick.
